Before 1648 Alsace consisted of several dignitaries. Some Catholic, the other Protestant-Catholic or Protestant-Calvinist. The Roman Catholic church divided the area into the dioceses of Strasbourg and Basel.
In the years 1648-1789, the Lower Alsace belonged to the Bishopric of Strasbourg and the Upper-Alsace to the Bishopric of Basel. From 1945 until today Alsace is a Catholic diocese, headquartered in Strasbourg.
