W est Prussia was a province of the state of Prussia on both sides of the lower Vistula. The capital of West Prussia was Gdansk. For the first division (1772) and second division (1793) of Poland, West Prussia was formed from the bordering areas of Prussia royal share.
After the decree of the Prussian king Frederick II: the province got the name West Prussia and the Kingdom of Prussia, united with the Warmia the name East Prussia.
